The Disabled celebrate world disaster day
The SG at the Governor's office, Absalom Woloa Monono has appealed to all able persons to help persons living with disabilities in all circumstances and situations.

The ceremony that was in its 1st  edition, was celebrated at the Treasure Center of Bamenda under the theme "Persons with Disabilities Faced with Disaster situations". It was attended by Regional Delegates of Public Health, Scientific Research and Innovation, State Property and Land Tenure and Social Affairs as well as a cross section of the army rescue team and staff and pupils of the Treasure Center.

The Secretary General at the North West Governor's Office seized the occasion to announce government's efforts in managing risks by degasing the Lake Nyos an resettling the displaced populations as well as the resettlement of those affected by floods in Babessi. He equally disclosed that government has adopted measures to ensure that all public places have special entry and exit ways for disabled persons.

The Head Teacher of the Treasure Center, Mrs.Song Laurentia after him, took the floor to inform those present about the center which has staff strength of nineteen and a pupil population of one hundred and twenty eight. She disclosed that the center aims to provide a safe and happy environment for children and young adults with intellectual disabilities. She recounted some of the achievements which include; settling seven young adults in some places where they do useful activities for which they are compensated and sponsoring some sixteen adults to learn a trade. She however revealed that lack of basic tools is the main challenge they face.

The Regional Delegate of Social Affairs on his part highlighted the short term and long term measures geared towards protecting and assisting persons with disabilities which include; the putting in place of a national solidarity fund which will be a veritable device in attaining the policy of autonomy for persons with disabilities, the implementation of the practical guide on access to public buildings by contractors during construction of buildings and capacity building of persons with disabilities and organizations delivering care to them in matters related to disaster management amongst others. He ended by calling on all to adopt positive attitudes towards disability.

The President of the coordination Unit of disabled persons, NENTCHO Samuel appealed for the effective implementation of legislation for the protection of the rights of persons living with disabilities and for the inclusion of disabled persons in policy making. He added that the Tubah Council has made great strides in including disabled persons in their policy by electing him councilor and appealed that other organizations should emulate them.

The ceremony was an occasion for the Head of the Army Rescue Unit to create awareness and teach persons with disabilities on how to help themselves when need arises while raising an alarm for assistance. This was done during a simulation exercise carried out by the Army Rescue Unit and the active pupils of the Treasure Center though intellectually impaired demonstrated their abilities during the exercise despite the short rehearsal.
